Ceil Chapman Cocktail Dress Unveiling

Well, here she is!  I was adding silk petals and flowers and beads right up until the end – a ticking clock is a great motivator.  And while I wish I had had more time with the embellishments (the fun part!), and it was not exactly my original vision, it works!  In truth, I am thrilled with the finished product.

I felt like the belle of the ball!  Everyone was extremely complimentary about the dress.  Many people told me how much they loved the dress, and their eyes widened at the notion that I made the garment myself.

I have a love/hate relationship with people approaching me and immediately asking if I made my dress – does that mean it looks like something from a home economics class!?  So it is extremely gratifying to have people amazed and a bit skeptical that the gown is home made!

I like to christen all of my extra special creations.  And because of the green and purple color palette, I keep thinking of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  So I am going with “Titania.”  If the queen of the faeries partnered with Dior to create a gown, I imagine this would be the end result.

My homage to Dovima!

My Persian lamb wrap (don't worry, it's synthetic!) was a gift several years ago from a lovely lady, and it was the perfect addition to my outfit.  As the temperature dropped, I was glad to have a little extra warmth!

I have a lot more construction specifics, but for now, I could not wait to share the finished product.  More pictures may be found over on my flickr account.

  1. Absolutely stunning! You look so beautiful. The child's dream of a princess dress to go to the ball. The colour is such a lovely green too. Love it!

  2. BEAUTIFUL! Woooow Love it so much. Green suits your colouring so well. And it's awesome when people are incredulous about a garment being home made. I guess people must think one would only make every day clothes.

Good to see you made it so long too. I just bought a vintage evening dress in the most amazing deep navy, heavy satin and it's quite long. It reaches about the same height as yours does. I didn't want to take it up because of the circle skirt and so I think I shall leave it. Evening dresses do look so glamorous at that length!

  3. Oh my! Your dress is gorgeous. That color and the length are fantastic. Thanks for sharing the process and the final outcome.
I always get a bit anxious when the conversation turns to whether I made it or not. I'm always worried that they'll then see or create any flaws in the finished piece. I'm sure it's just my overachieving, neurotic mind. Anyway, your dress is beautiful :D

  4. All your stuff is awesome, but this one jumps the shark! Titania is a very, very good name indeed.

I know the feeling about the "Did you make that?" question. /sigh. My usual answer is "I'll take that as a compliment..."

  12. Wowza, that dress is amazing! You look beautiful in it! When people ask "Did you make that?" imagine it's because they've never seen anything like it in shops and it has caught their eye. Also if they know you sew then it's almost a safe bet to ask if you made it :)

And for the record, based on what I've seen, nothing you've made lands in the Home Ec territory. It's more the House of Elliot territory. Fact.

  22. It's beautiful! Absolutely stunning. Is it supported or do you have to wear a petticoat underneath? Did you make a petticoat separately?

    1. I am wearing two petticoats underneath the dress! I made one myself, and the other was purchased. The dress itself has wide horsehair braid sewn into the hem.

It's tough to fit in a car with that much poof - but it sure is fun!

  30. I think the reason you would be asked if you made this particular dress is because one would never see/find it anywhere...indeed it is absolutely priceless in the invaluable sense of it's uniqueness and beauty...oh and that green !. My compliments, I am in awe ! The purse is a little treasure too, and you model the whole outfit to perfection. I have only just joined your blog so I haven't followed the making process but I bet it was quite something !
